HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you from all of us at The Bullfrog Blues Club, Southsea. To start the year off with a bang, on Thursday 5th January we've got the wonderful CHICAGO 9, starting their 21st year together! Tickets for The Bullfrog gig are available now online for just £9 via our secure PayPal site, http://webplus.barkingspider.abelgratis.com/tickets/ Formed from friendship and mutual musical respect, Chicago 9 have been playing regularly since 2002 and have become a firm favourite wherever they play. The interplay of guitarist Steve Brennan and saxophonist Paul Tasker are driven by the solid backline of Melvyn Lockyer on bass guitar and Elrad Matthews on drums. Add Jim Mitchell on keys, and the superb vocals of Angela Restorick, and you have a great band who play their own arrangements of varied blues classics, rhythm & blues, and add a touch of rock 'n' roll for good measure. These guys have collectively or individually shared the stage & opened for many blues greats including OTIS GRAND, MUD MORGANFIELD, STAN WEBB'S CHICKEN SHACK, ERIC SARDINAS & BIG MOTOR, MIKE VERNON & THE MIGHTY COMBO, SARI SCHORR & THE ENGINE ROOM, JW JONES, PAUL LAMB & THE KINGSNAKES, and also EDDIE & THE HOT RODS, DR FEELGOOD & NINE BELOW ZERO. This recent review from Bryan Stan says it all... "Chicago 9 are probably one of the best Rhythm and Blues bands in the South of England. Lead guitarist Steve Brennan is, without a doubt, unique and addicting to watch. His control and arrangement throughout each gig is inspiring. The bass player Melvyn Lockyer is solid and unwavering with his fantastic and mellow walks up and down the fretboard.Elrad Matthews' drumming complements Melvyn's bass playing without fault, and Jim Mitchell on keyboards and and Paul Tasker on saxophone then expertly round up the musical masterpiece. They spontaneously groove each song along so well. Finally, there is lead singer Angela Restorick, whose melting tones make each piece her own. If you have never heard this band, I urge you to watch them live and see the crowd dance the night away.
