This Thursday 3rd March the Bullfrog Blues Club is proud to present The West Side Blues Band at The Dockyard Club, Onslow Road, Southsea. Doors are 8pm. Band On Stage 8:30pm. As their name suggest the West Side play blues inspired by the sounds of the west side of Chicago, music by Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Freddie King and more. Mixed in with this theme you find a few originals and music from other blues traditions, a little of the South Side sound of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf etc. a dash of Louis Jordan and a bit of New Orleans. Tickets are just £9.00 in advance available from our online tickets sales site at http://webplus.barkingspider.abelgratis.com/tickets or in person from Streetlevel Musical Exchange Albert Road, Southsea. (Cash only). The West Side are fronted by our own Andy Broad on guitar and vocals. As you will know Andy has gigged extensively throughout Europe and the UK both solo and with bands and is a confident and assured performer of the blues. He is joined on bass by Tim Nowell, whom he first worked with as part of The Busted Fender Blues Band in the mid nineties. Busted Fender worked many festivals and supported many great American blues players in their time, and rightly deserved their reputation! Shortly before Busted Fender split up, back in the late nineties, they formed the first of a number of lineups that eventually evolved into today's band. The motivation initially being to play material that might not fit in the set of the main band and for Andy to explore more leads vocals , it soon become a band in it's own right playing many gigs and festivals such as Southsea Folk and Roots Festival and Blues At the Fort, with a reputation for solid, no nonsense blues. 10 years or so ago they were joined by Barry Leaney on Harmonica and Russ Tarley on drums to form the first version of the current band. To complete the links back to the Busted Fender Blues band they are now joined by their old colleague, Kevin Brazier on piano / organ. Kevin and Tim also played together for while in the New Orleans orientated Big Easy and Kevin was proud to play with Tony Farinha's "Werewolves of London" in London at the 100 club. Kevin and Tim and Andy have all explored the jazzier end of the blues spectrum, with Kevin working with Jameson Set, Tim taking some time to study jazz bass at Chichester, then working in a number of jazz outfits including a couple of quartets with Andy on guitar. All contributing a breadth and depth in the music as a whole.
