On Thursday 16th September Spider's Webs@The Bullfrog is proud to present the legendary acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter KEITH CHRISTMAS at The Dockyard Club in Onslow Rd, Southsea . In 1969 David Bowie co-organised a free festival at the bandstand in a park in Beckenham, and invited Keith to appear. The festival has taken place annually since then, and is now known as Bowie's Beckenham Oddity. The bandstand is now officially known as The Bowie Bandstand. Just after the festival, Bowie recorded âEURoeMemory of A Free FestivalâEUR, which appeared on his âEURoeSpace Oddity album, and invited Keith to played acoustic guitar on the album. KeithâEUR?s first album, âEURoeStimulusâEUR, was released that same year, and his reputation was such that he played the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970, together with bands including Marc BolanâEUR?s Tyrannosaurus Rex, Roy Harper, Al Stewart, Quintessence and many others. During the 1970s Keith released four more albums while touring with supporting bands including The Who, King Crimson, Ten Years After, Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, Hawkwind, Captain Beefheart and The Kinks. A veritable âEURoewhoâEUR?s whoâEUR of top musicians have appeared on KeithâEUR?s recordings including Greg Lake, Cat Stevens, Rod Argent, Mighty Baby, Pat Donaldson, Keith Tippett, Gerry Conway, Shelagh McDonald, Pete Sinfield and Mel Collins. Keith - voted one of six favourite artists by writers of âEURoeSoundsâEUR magazine - changed direction for a short while in 1991 and formed the blues band, Weatherman, who released an album of the same name the following year. However, he soon returned to his acoustic roots, and has released many fine albums since. The opening track of his 2003 instrumental CD âEURoeAcousticaâEUR was used on the BBC documentary âEURoeHidden GardensâEUR. In 2006, saw his solo CD "Light of the Dawn" - a rave review in the magazine fRoots followed. "the sound is fantastic and grabs the attention: the confident, gutsy guitar, picked or slide, has immediacy and intimacy in equal measure; and Christmas's urgent, hoarse vocals can't help but involve the listener in the moods and stories of the songs... a fine timeless album" His latest album "Life, Life" came out in 2019. In 2017 Keith was back at the Bowie Bandstand , and returned again to play in 2019 - the 50th anniversary of the original Free Festival -and on that day it was given Grade 2 listed status.
