(Please note - our scheduled band for February - Sugarman Sam And The Voodoo Men - are unfortunately unable to appear due to illness. We hope to reschedule the band in the near future and wish Sam a swift recovery).. We're delighted to present THE UNDERGROUNDHOGS at The Bullfrog Blues Club this Thursday (1st February) The Undergroundhogs were formed at the beginning 2017 to continue the legacy of the superb and influential blues band The Groundhogs, who scored a hat trick of top 10 albums in the 1970s. The Groundhogs founder Tony "T.S." McPhee played at The Bullfrog Blues Club in July 2005 together with his wife Joanna Deacon, but suffered a series of illnesses shortly after, and following a stroke in 2009 he's now unable to sing or speak. The Undergroundhogs are truly a tribute band formed for all the right reasons. After The Undergroundhogs designed a poster - incorporating the Groundhogs logo together with the word âEUR?UnderâEUR? - they contacted Tony McPhee to ask for permission to use the logo, including some video links to their rehearsal footage. Tony e-mailed the band, granting permission to use the logo, and saying âEUR?Love the name and the videos". A few weeks later he again e mailed the band, inviting them to at the Groundhogs annual Christmas party at his local pub, The Wrekin Arms, in Shropshire. The Undergroundhogs - Cliff Charter (guitar and vocals), Gareth Turner (guitar) Cliff Stopforth (bass) and Rick Anderton (drums) - jumped at the chance, and they were delighted when "T.S." paid for them to stay in a B&B and the owner of The Wrekin Arms paid for their van hire. Cliff said: âEUR?When we were doing the soundcheck, it was just Tony and his wife, Joanna Deacon, who was on the sound desk, watching. It was funny playing TonyâEUR?s songs back to him; that was a strange experience. At the actual gig we just launched into it, and thoroughly enjoyed it.âEUR? The icing on the cake was Tony McPhee joining the band on guitar for three songs during the actual gig, He later sent them a message which said: âEUR?Brilliant band, theyâEUR?ve taken my songs and given them a new lease of life!" The Undergroundhogs appear at The Bullfrog Blues Club at The Dockyard Club, Onslow Rd, Southsea, PO5 2NH on Thursday 1st February. Advance tickets £8 -(some concessions available) are available via our secure website -?www.barkingspider.abelgratis.com?via Paypal and also from Street Level Music, 139 Albert Rd, Southsea, Hampshire, PO5 2SQ (cashpayment in person only).
