Dave & Mick's Pompey Pop Pix is an excellent large size (A4) soft back book compiled by our very own Dave Allen (Reet Petite & Gone, Rosemary, Harlem Speakeasy etc... ) together with Mick Cooper, another "old school" musician and historian of the Pompey music scene. This book is definitely a BARKING SPIDER RECOMMENDATION! Dave & Mick's Pompey Pop Pix traces the Pompey music scene through the fifties to the end of the sixties (and just scraping into the early seventies...), with some wonderful pictures of The Birdcage, Ricky's, Kimbell's, South Parade Pier etc etc, and pictures of numerous superstars actually at these venues, including Rod Stewart, Family, Adam Faith, Long John Baldrey, Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, Pink Floyd (in the Pier's dressing room!) etc etc. And that's without mentioning pictures of the LOCAL bands & artistes, including Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, Manfred Mann, The Classics, St Louis Checks, Rosemary, Soul Society, Pat Nelson, Jon Isherwood, Terry Shulman and Bernie Fox. There's also some great reproductions of original posters and flyers from top artistes appearing in Pompey during this magical time, including The Who, The Pretty Things, Reverend Gary Davis, Donovan, Josh White, Jimi Hendrix, The Move, Country Joe & The Fish, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Jesse Fuller, Chris Farlowe.... they're all here! It was advertised today in The News (p 46) in a block of "Stocking Fillers",- they described the book as "An enthralling look at the bands and venues operating in Portsmouth and Southsea" It's available from these outlets, price £14.95....
