KELLY JOE PHELPS. & CORINNE WEST - Bullfrog Blues Club Southsea Thurs 7th October

The Barking Spider's most eagerly anticipated gig of the year? CORINNE WEST & KELLY JOE PHELPS!!!!

I've been a massive fan of Kelly Joe for many, many years, and if you were at his gig at The Bullfrog back in 2003, and The Isle of Wight Roots Festival in 2004, when I again booked Kelly Joe to headline the Festival, you'll KNOW how brilliant this guy is....

A few years ago came across Corinne West, via an introduction from David Bennet Cohen, of Country Joe & The Fish... After checking her out, I immediately tried to book her, but the dates didn't pan out,....

To quote Bob Dylan..... blame it on a simple twist of fate....but CORINNE WEST & KELLY JOE PHELPS are now going out as a duo - and they're at the Bullfrog Blues Club on South Paade Pier, Southsea on Thursday 7th October!

Tickets are just £10 - an absolute bargain, and not to be missed!!!!! (Tickets for their Brighton show have already SOLD OUT!!!!)

Kelly Joe Phelps & Corrinne West

Kelly Joe Phelps grew up in Sumner, Washington, and began playing guitar at 12. He spent 10 years playing jazz, and refers to his "conversion" to a blues musician when he began listening to acoustic blues masters like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Pete Williams.

Initially gaining notice for his solo lapstyle slide guitar playing, which he played by laying the instrument flat and fretting it with a heavy steel bar, he has incorporated more ensemble work in his later albums. Phelps began writing songs in 1990. He began singing and released debut, "Lead Me On" in 1995., which as well as his own songs, featured traditional numbers such as "Motherless Children" and "Fare Thee Well".

He followed this album with two more solo albums, "Roll Away The Stone" (1997), "Shine Eyed Mr. Zen" (1999), and on "Sky Like A Broken Clock" and its companion piece, the "Beggar's Oil" EP (2001), he was joined by a bassist and a drummer. On 2003's brilliant "Slingshot Professionals", Phelps collected a wider collection of musicians to play guitar, bass, drums, mandolin, violin, and accordion.

In 2005, Phelps released a live album "Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind" followed a year later by the studio album "Tunesmith Retrofit", and his latest album is another solo album, "Western Bell".

Other talk about Kelly Joe....

Steve Earle: "Kelly Joe Phelps plays, sings, and writes the blues. HOLD UP before you lock that in - forget about songs in a twelve bar three chord progression with a two line repeat and answer rhyme structure - though he can certainly do that when he wants to. I'm talking about a feeling, a smoky, lonesome, painful - yet somehow comforting groove that lets you know that you are not alone - even when you're blue. Play on brother."

Bill Frisell: "I first became aware of Kelly Joe Phelps when my daughter (who was 9 or 10 at the time) brought home a cd ('Lead Me On') from the Vancouver Folk Festival. "You might like this, Dad" she said. Boy, was she right. I've heard Kelly Joe mention that he's been inspired by people like Roscoe Holcomb, Robert Pete Williams, Dock Boggs, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. He seems to have absorbed all this (and all kinds of other stuff as well) and come back with something all his own."

Tim O'Brien: "When I heard Kelly Joe the first time, I was amazed how it all made so much sense. His music is a wide world with three hundred and sixty degrees of influence.... Kelly Joe is a musical slight of hand master. He pulls world wide sounds out of his guitar."

At age 15, Corinne West grabbed her guitar and left home, eventually ending up back in California in a remote mountain town, making her home in a cabin that had been built by her great grandfather. She has been carrying her guitar ever since. Corinne’s music might get called “roots,” “Americana”, or even “progressive folk”., but it doesn’t really fit in any genre box. It’s elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk. It’s west coast acoustic-soul music- absolutely compelling both in the strength of her writing and the expressive power of her voice.

In concert, Corinne brings a special grace and fire to the stage. When she sings, she doesn’t sound like anyone else. The strength of her songwriting, the power of her voice and her magnetic stage presence create a captivating performance, winning rave reviews at home and abroad. People who hear Corinne perform once want to be there again. Some have taken to traveling major distances for the opportunity. If you get the chance to hear her live, take it. And if you get the chance to see Corrinne with Kelly Joe Phelps? Well, 'nuff said....

Kelly Joe Phelps & Corrinne West

Master guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps has taken time out to explore new horizons in his pursuit of excellence, and is touring in a duo with Corrinne West, performing her superb songs.

Kelly Joe Phelps grew up in Sumner, Washington, a blue-collar and farming town. He learned country and folk songs, and began playing guitar at 12. He spent 10 years playing jazz, mostly as a bass player. He refers to his "conversion" to a blues musician when he began listening to acoustic blues masters like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Pete Williams.

Initially gaining notice for his solo lapstyle slide guitar playing, which he played by laying the instrument flat and fretting it with a heavy steel bar, he has incorporated more ensemble work in his later albums. Inspired by the birth of his daughter, Phelps began writing songs in 1990. He began singing and released his critically praised debut, Lead Me On" in 1995. The album showcased Phelps' craft, and as well as his own songs, he tackled traditional numbers such as "Motherless Children" and "Fare Thee Well".

He followed this album with two more solo albums, "Roll Away The Stone" (1997), "Shine Eyed Mr. Zen" (1999).

On his next release, "Sky Like A Broken Clock" and its companion piece, the "Beggar's Oil" EP (2001), he was joined by a bassist and a drummer. In order to achieve a richer, orchestrated sound on 2003's "Slingshot Professionals", Phelps collected a wider collection of musicians to play guitar, bass, drums, mandolin, violin, and accordion.

In 2005, Phelps released a live album "Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind" followed a year later by the studio album "Tunesmith Retrofit", His latest album is another solo album, "Western Bell".

He's not just playing 'AT' the music or trying to recreate or imitate something that's happened in the past. He seems to have tapped into the artery somehow. There's a lot going on in between and behind the notes. Mystery. He's been an inspiration to me."
