Hot on the heels of last week's superb 'unplugged' gig featuruing Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, another of a series of intimate "up close" acoustic gigs will be in held The Gun Room of The R.M.A. Tavern, 58, Cromwell Rd., Eastney, Southsea, Hants. starting 8.p.m.on Sunday 20th June. However, if you live in the Bristol area, you can catch Ron at another great little venue, The Lansdown, Clifton Rd., Bristol, BS8, starting 7.30.p.m. on Friday 18th June . "Alias" Ron Kavana is a singer/songwriter/composer, multi-instrumentalist, band leader, producer, author, and poet who has been at the cutting edge of the international folk scene for three decades, and is acclaimed as one of the folk world’s greatest performers, writers and storytellers. Ron first came to attention in the 70s playing in bands with Chris Farlowe, Alexis Korner, Big Jay McNealy, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Doug Sahm and Tim O’Brien, whilst in the ‘80‘s he recorded and performed with musicians including The Dubliners, Paddy Moloney, Sinead O’Connor, The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Richard Thompson and Paul McCartney. In 1988 he formed the Alias Ron Kavana Band , and by 1992 they’d won the Folk Roots award as Best Live Act for an unprecedented three years in succession - and had three albums in the UK’s independent charts at the same time. Ron’s songs and instrumentals have been performed and recorded by The Pogues, Cherish The Ladies, Dick Gaughan, Niamh Parsons, Waterson-Carthy, Eileen Ivers, Paddy Keenan, Mary Coughlan, Coope, Boyes & Simpson, Jimmy Crowley, Sean Keane, and many others. Ron’s album 'Home Fire' was MOJO magazine’s most highly recommended Irish album in their book, '1,000 essential CDs' , and includes Ron’s song “Reconciliation”, one of the most widely recorded songs ever - 200 known released versions! The song was re-recorded for his double CD, 'Songs of Rebellion, Resistance and Reconciliation', which sold over 100,000 copies The album “For The Children”, which he wrote and recorded with Shane MacGowan and the Pogues, Mary Coughlan and some of Ireland’s top traditional musicians, has become a much sought after collector’s album due for re-release soon. Ron Kavana's live performances are legendary, and this gig is a rare chance to see Ron play a solo acoustic gig in intimate surroundings.
