"The Beatles were cute, The Stones were students, but The Pretty Things were plain frightening, & much better at psychedelia than The Stones.......”
( the late great John Peel )
“ I first met The Pretty Things in 1963, and years later Jimmy Page suggested signing them to our new label - Swansong Records, A few days later they asked me to manage them as well as Led Zeppelin, so I jumped at the request ….. the rest is history".
(Peter Grant – LED ZEPPELIN's one and only manager)

"I have always been constantly amazed at how underrated Dick Taylor has been as a guitar player".
(Jim McCarty, The Yardbirds)
"The Stones just about walked the line; The Pretty Things went way over it. This was a time when getting married could ruin a pop star’s career. The man in the street couldn’t imagine any of the Pretty Things even being married - except to each other... "
(Screaming Lord Sutch)
“I’ve always wanted to meet Phil May - The Pretty Things were the biggest influence on us. They were so wild - they invented garage bands.”
(Joey Ramone, The Ramones)

THE MEN THEY COULDN’T HANG
This is the band that tore the hell out the 2008 Southsea Folk Roots & Blues Festival - so we just HAD to have them back for our Tenth Anniversary The band's mixture of folk & punk is similar to The Pogues - no too surprising as founder member Shanne Bradley was also founder of Shane MacGowan's first band, The Nipple Erectors! Main composer Paul Simmonds is a devastatingly incisive songwrtier, with more hooks than a fishing club..
This band seriously kicks ass!
Tickets flying out of the door for this one too -and ONLY £12.50!

Sunday 29th August: THE POPES
This band that really need no intrduction.. The Popes are Shane MacGowan's current band, and at the Festival gig they're fronted by the great Paul McGuinness, founder member of the band. The Popes are no strangers to South Parade Pier, having played a brilliant St Patrick's weekend gig with the mighty Shane, and they've also appeared here without "yer man". The songs on ther new album were written by Paul McGuinness whilst he was incarcerated in Pentonville prison, so the title "Outlaw Heaven" is very fitting!
Some tickets still available - JUST £12!

Monday 30th August: SHERMAN ROBERTSON BAND
SHERMAN ROBERTSON BAND
A REAL treat for blues fans, Sherman's appearance is a first for the Festival's blues day and a first for Bullfrog Blues Club, who co-run the blues day at the Pier. Sherman is probably the biggest name we've ever placed on a blues day at the Festival!
Born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas, Sherman spent time on the road in the late 1960's as lead guitarist with blues superstar Bobby "Blue" Bland. He also backed Junior Parker, spent five years with Clifton Chenier (" the King Of Zydeco"), and also played with Rockin' Dopsie and Johnny Copeland.
Paul Simon chose Sherman as guitar player on his phenomenally succesful "Graceland" album.

Sherman's 1993 album "I'm The Man" was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award, and was followed by "Here And Now", in 1996, and In early 1998, Sherman was part of first class band which included keyboardist Bill Payne and drummer Richie Hayward of Little Feat, and together they released "Going Back Home" album.

"Blues Revue" loved the release. " Potent singing and sizzling guitar…Robertson is unstoppable - one of the most important artists in blues"
