Herbie Goins and The Norman Beaker Band - tonight at The Eastney Cellars! The legendary Birdcage Club in Eastney Road, Portsmouth, played host to some of the biggest names in Rock ‘n Roll history, including The Who and Chris Farlowe. Another huge star of the 1960s Mod movement to play at the Eastney venue, was Northern Soul founding father Herbie Goins. Born in Florida USA, Herbie was the official singer of Blues Incorporated, the band of Alexis Korner, considered the father of the White Blues, who assembled those who were to become the most interesting artists of the English scene. Herbie sang with musicians such as Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Danny Thompson and Phil Seaman. T he albums recorded in this period include “Live at the Cavern” and “Red Hot from Alexis”. After some years with Alexis Korner, Herbie formed his own group, Herbie Goins & The Night-Timers and concentrated on the type of Rhythm and Blues which he helped shape into the origins of what we now call Northern Soul. Herbie became one of the favourite singers of the Mod movement., who followed Herbie around all the famous London Clubs - The Flamingo, Marquee, Sylibles. His song “Number One in Your Heart” became a Mod hymn. EMI signed him and his records entered the charts in most European countries and eventually became in great demand for collectors of rare records. During this time, Herbie played memorable jam sessions20with Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker and even Jimi Hendrix. At that point, Hendrix was still unknown, but would be at Blaises Club in London every Monday to catch Herbie’s set. One of the biggest fans of Herbie Goins was a young Robert Plant, who, even today, still remembers every word of his songs. After spending many years writing and producing, Herbie returned full time to the live music scene at the end of 80s. He tours, not only in Italy but all over Europe and also across the United States, playing clubs and numerous festivals. For this tour of the UK, Herbie will be joined by The Norman Beaker Band, who have worked with Chris Farlowe for a number of years (including two fine gigs at The Cellars!) and who also had strong links with Herbie’s old mentor Alexis Korner.
