Dear friends, It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that as a result of the change of ownership of South Parade Pier, that The Bullfrog Blues Club will no longer host events on the first Thursday of every month. The new owners of The Pier were not happy with the numbers that were turning up since they took over, and have decided to change direction and turn the Albert Bar into a top class retaurant to rival Gunwharf. I'm sure you will join with me to wish them the very best of luck. We have been at South Parade Pier for over eight years now, and until two and a half years ago, when I moved to lreland, The Bullfrog Blues Club ran gigs EVERY Thursday at the Pier. So... it's the end of an era. . Over the years at The Bullfrog we've had some superb artistes, including... KELLY JOE PHELPS, CHRIS FARLOWE, THE YARDBIRDS, ROBIN TROWER, BEN ANDREWS, AYNSLEY LISTER BAND, KENT DUCHAINE, DEBORAH BONHAM BAND, DR. FEELGOOD, CANNED HEAT, THE BILL THOMAS BAND, EARL GAINES & AL GARNER, AMOR, CHRIS SMITHER, AMOS GARRETT, BAD INFLUENCE, SINNERBOY, LARRY MILLER BAND, GWYN ASHTON BAND, CHRIS JAGGER, MIKE SANCHEZ, GUY DAVIS, PAUL LAMB AND THE KINGSNAKES, BIG BILL MORGANFIELD, MEMO GONZALES & THE BLUESCASTERS, LITTLE TOBY WALKER, GEOFF MULDAUR, IAN SEIGAL... the list goes on and on. Our very own local artistes who also regularly appeared at The Pier included ANDY BROAD, his bands BURNT ICE and THE CONTINENTALS, the late lamented REET PETITE & GONE, WHITE KNUCKLE BLUES BAND and CLAUDE BOURBON, to name but a few. The Bullfrog Blues Club could never have happened without the help of The Barking Spider staff - unpaid, over worked, but always willing to help keep the blues alive. Special mentions must go to my 'right hand man' Pete, (a.k.a. Lord Gnome, the king of the raffle) and his wife Fiona (Lady Gnome), and of course Portsmouth's. very own King of the Blues, Andy Broad. Also Dan Ogus who before relocating to London to run a pub turned up every week without fail. And not forgetting Andy Lauchlan, Carol Burbidge, and more recently Micky Pape and John Roux. A special mention must also go to Andy Thomas of P.I.P.A., for supplying P.A at prices commensurate with how many people turned up for the gig! Some good news however... the Southsea Folk & Roots Festival will still take place on the Pier over August Bank Holiday weekend, and you can get your filll of blues on the Monday when we will be presenting Bob Long, Burnt Ice,Claude Bourbon, Sally Strawberry and The Bad Apples, Kris Dollimor Saiichi Sugiyama Band /Creamy during the free daytime event and Mike Sanchez and The Portions (supported by Kris Dollimore) in the evening. The OTHER good news is that Steve Pitt is allowing The Bullfrog Blues Club to run the gigs already booked at of The Cellars At Eastney wherever possible, but bringing them forward a day to the first Wednesday of the month. So far these "shifted" gigs are now on the following dates at The Cellars.. The very last Bullfrog Blues Club at South Parade Pier will be on on Thursday June 5th, and will feature that fine Brighton based band The Elevators, but as it's a special night we also have performances from Andy Broad and also White Knuckle Blues Band All this for just £8!!!! It's going to be a great finale to eight years of Bullfrog Blues on The Pier, so PLEASE be there Finally thanks to all of you who are part of the Bullfrog extended family for patronising The Bullfrog at The Pier - as Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead once said....
