A VERY SPECIAL blues gig at The R.M.A. on Thursday (20th)

On Thursday 20th March there’s something VERY special on offer for blues lovers at The R.M.A. Tavern in Cromwell Road, Eastney, when Marjorie Thompson, a superb country blues guitarist and singer from New York City, appears. And unbelievably, entry is - as usual - free! THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!!!

Marjorie Thompson took up the guitar in the mid-1960's and quickly became an adept & passionate player, in the traditional styles of the blues artists of the 20s and 30s as well as New York street singer Rev. Gary Davis and the rediscovered Mississippi John Hurt.

Marjorie Thompson is championed by the legendary Jorma Kaukonen,of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. Hot Tuna was an acoustic country blues spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. Featuring the Airplanes’ lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and their bassist Jack Casady, Hot Tuna released their first album in 1970.

Jorma Kaukonen also opened The Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp in rural Ohio, weekend workshops with Jorma, Jack Casady and other master musicians. Marjorie Thompson attended as a student in 1999, and is now Jorma Kaukonen's teaching assistant. In 2007 she was an instructor in her own workshop, "Songcrafting and Country Blues Essentials," which was quickly filled.
By 2001 Marjorie had written 40 songs, and a demo CD in 2001 opened the door to nearly 100 bookings in her first year.

Marjorie maintains an active tour schedule, playing throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, as well as European tours and events and festivals around the United States.

“I've been following Marjorie Thompson's music for, well, almost ten years. ‘Right By Me’ is certainly her finest outing to date. It is well produced and delivered with depth and conviction. Strong, Marjorie, very strong."

"I'm tempted to say that I taught her everything she knows, but she's gone so far beyond anything I showed her I'm afraid I might get called on it."

Chris Smither

"The songwriting is thoughtful, witty, sometimes whimsical but always clever. Her guitar playing is steeped in the Piedmont and Blues traditions, showing that she is an expert fingerpicker.”
