South Coast’s most prominent yet underrated songwriters will be playing a rare solo gig  in the Gun Room at the RMA Tavern in Eastney on Saturday 17th May.

Paul Simmonds, founder member of one of the most popular Indie bands of the 80’s, THE MEN THEY COULDN’T HANG, will be joined by the extraordinary vocal talents of Brighton-based Americana artiste Naomi Bedford.

The Men They Couldn’t Hang became huge all around Europe in the 80’s, sharing bills with the likes of David Bowie, Van Morrison, The Smiths and The Clash, with some even describing them as “England’s answer to the Pogues”. And as writer of the hit singles such as “The Colours”, “Ironmasters”, “Rain Steam and Speed” and “The Ghosts Of Cable Street”.  Paul, who has been labelled “England’s answer to Woody Guthrie”, was responsible for much of The Men They Couldn’t Hang's musical success.

The Men They Couldn’t Hang  disbanded in 1990 after five album releases, only to reform again in 1996 due to popular demand, and their rise to prominence carries on apace as they continue to tour and perform at all of the top festival around the UK (including Wickham and Gosport & Fareham) and Europe.

Naomi Bedford, who joinis  Paul Simmonds at The R.M.A., is a  talented songstress who has a little of the Be Good Tanyas vibe about her music. She certainly impressed  Jools Holland and REM’s Peter Buck  - after appearing with them on Jool’s “Later” TV programme they described her voice as “amazing” and “dreamy” respectively.

Tickets for this intimate and "up close" concert are £7.50 each, and can be obtained by phoning organiser Ken Brown on 02392 382888 or e-mailing to reserve at kenbrown1@tinyworld.co.uk.- but hurry- tickets are lmited!

The Men They Couldn’t Hang headline The Southsea Folk & Roots Festival on Sunday 24th August 20o8, on South Parade Pier, when Paul Bedford & Naomi Bedford will also be sharing the bill. All for the bargain price of £10!
