This coming Tuesday (24th July) there's a real treat in store for folk rock fans at The Cellars At Eastney. DAVE PEGG from FAIRPORT CONVENTION & P.J. WRIGHT from LITTLE JOHNNY ENGLAND will be presenting their brilliant show " A NIGHT OFF WITH PEGGY & PEEJ" at The Cellars at Eastney. Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg teams up with Little Johnny England guitarist PJ Wright for an extra-curricular celebration of their combined seventy-three years as professional musicians, featuring songs, tunes and stories from their differing musical paths through the worlds of folk, folk-rock, rock, blues and even some surf-rock! P.J and Dave Pegg are also members of The Dylan Project, which presents interpretations of Bob Dylan's music. The band features Steve Gibbons on vocals backed by P.J. & Peggy, and two other members of Fairport Convention, Gerry Conway & Simon Nicol. PJ Wright’s musical roots range from rhythm ‘n blues and country to English traditional folk music, although his career has spanned everything from an association with 1960s underground cult band Family to backing big-name American acts such as Bobby Vee, Del Shannon and The Coasters. During the 1980s and 90s, PJ recorded and toured as lead guitarist with the legendary Steve Gibbons Band, which naturally led to The Dylan Project. Since 1999, PJ has been lead vocalist and guitarist with the five-piece folk-rock band, Little Johnny England; the band has appeared at many concert venues and festivals throughout the UK, continental Europe and the USA, releasing three CDs so far (number 4 in progress!). He is an increasingly prolific songwriter, and has worked extensively as a session musician, including recordings with Julie Felix, Ashley Hutchings, Chris While and Julie Matthews, David Hughes, Anna Ryder, and Christine Collister. His debut solo CD, “Hedge of Sound” was released in October 2005. Fairport Convention invited PJ to perform opening sets on their winter tour during February and March 2006. PJ has also just joined Ashley Hutchings’ “Morris On Live” show. During the 60s beat boom in Birmingham Dave Pegg was soon was playing “all-nighters” as lead guitarist in The Crawdaddies before auditioning for lead guitarist in one of Birmingham's best-known bands, The Uglys, fronted by Steve Gibbons. Dave didn’t get the lead guitarist job, but landed the job as their bassist instead, starting a career as probably the best bassist on the folk rock circuit. After Dave left The Uglys he formed a band called Way Of Life with John Bonham - later John then went off to play with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds, and then fame and fortune followed when he became Led Zeppelin’s drummer. Meanwhile, Dave joined Fairport Convention, and nearly forty years later he’s still with them! In the spring of 1970 Fairport Convention toured America supporting Jethro Tull, and ten years later, Dave was invited to join Jethro Tull, whilst still being part of the Fairport line-up. In 1987 Fairport Convention supported Jethro Tull on their 'Crest of a Knave' tour of the U.S.A., so he had to work twice as hard as anyone else on that particular tour! In 2006, Dave Pegg and Fairport are still keeping on what they do best. The last word goes to Dave Pegg “ I've been in Fairport for well over half my entire life and virtually all my adult life. When I joined, I never imagined I would still be going nearly forty years later! I love gigging, I love playing the bass. Picking a guitar up at home and playing a few songs to yourself just isn't the same as playing in front of people. Playing a good gig and pleasing the punters – I can't see I'll ever want to stop doing that”. Tickets are just £10 in advance from The Cellars.
