Nick Hugg, R.I.P.

After the sad news of Lenny Betts' passing I've just heard even more sad
news.....

Nick Hugg, the singer/harp player for Deaf Boy Hugg and The Hearing Aids,
and later Something For The Weekend, has died too. I understand he had
leukaemia.

Nick often turned up at The Bullfrog Blues Club with a crowd of mates who
came over on the ferry with their bikes from their homes in Gosport .

Nick was the younger brother of Mike Hugg, of Manfred Mann. (formerly
known as The Mann Hugg Blues Band).

As I was brought up in Gosport, I knew Nick for many years, and he used to
do a lot of gigs at Police Clubs for me back in the 80's.

I'd never miss one of their regular gigs at The Railway in Gosport if I
could help it. Indeed, when Warren Stocker, the landlord of The Railway, moved to
The Bugle in Titchfield, he booked Deaf Boy Hugg and The Hearing Aids to
play at his wedding reception - which still went ahead even though the bride
collapsed at the weeding ceremony and missed her own reception!. . .

I still have bootlegs of Deaf Boy Hugg and The Hearing Aids performances,
always featuring the band's party piece - their version of Manfred Mann's
"5-4-3-2-1" where Nick substituted the line "Uh, huh, it was the Manfreds" for
"Uh huh, it was the Deaf Boys." .

Rest in Peace, Nick. And watch out for Lenny Betts when you do your first
gig inside the pearly gates.....
