More on the passing of Lenny Betts

From Shep Woolley....

I feel Lenny Betts was much more than he was given credit for.

In the late 60's early 70's he was the regular compere and lynch pin of the
Sunshine Folk Club at Farlington - in fact had it not been for Len's
friendly attitude a great many of us would not have got into the local scene as much
as we did.

His most recent love was his new Martin guitar - he told me - "I'm knockin'
on these days, John boy, and so I thought I'd splash out and get me a good'un
before I die."

His song introductions were legendary and his jug playing quite memorable -
on one occassion at Farlington ( we must have been the only folk club that
packed up "in the black" - and even gave John Bedford's brother (who took it
over from us) £25, the cash box and the Lettrasett for the ticket
production! Anyway, Lenny did the whole night in shorts in a German helmet - just
think he would have had a laff to think he would have been thrown out of the
world cup for such actions.

A couple of years ago - when he was 'not on the playlist' for the RC music
club gang and their inclusion into the bandstand SW picnic - we rehearsed
(impossible) him to do "Thats The Way You Spell Chicken" - with Dangerous Curves
and Isla St Clair as his backing group - it was fantastic - I think we played
through three times!

He was also a considerable cook - many's the night the Farlington crew were
invited down to Crossing Gates Towers- bottom flat - for 'Stuffed marrow
piddletrenthide'

He loved his TA days & he loved his folk music and his bluegrass and he was
a part of the folk scene when laffing was not banned.

A great great loss .

much sad Sheppo.
