Two great folk roots gigs at The R.M.A. this weekend, when top singer songwriter Andy Smythe appears on Friday evening, followed by pysychedelic Celtic folk rockers Mary Jane on Saturday. Andy Smythe, one of the rising stars of the UK folk circuit, has travelled his way around the world performing in the USA, Australia and Spain since recording his first CD in 1999. Blessed with a powerful soaring melodic voice, his solo performances feature guitar, electric piano and occasionally harmonica, as he mixes his own material with traditional favourites. In 2002 Andy appeared at the prestigious London venue The Borderline, as part of their singer/songwriter festival. Appearances at major folk festivals in Broadstairs in 2002 and 2003 raised his profile still further, and his career then took off when his CD 'Love Unspoken' was released in the USA. He subsequently toured the USA., and gigs included an appearance at the CMJ New Music Festival in New York. Psychedelic-folk band Mary Jane formed in Southampton in 1993, with founder members Paul Alan Taylor (acoustic, electric & 12 string guitars), and Jo Quinn (vocals, flutes, acoustic guitar). They are now a five-piece electric band, growing more proficient than ever at their live performances, often featuring twin fiddles & vocals from Jo & Gillie Leach, who was previously playing predominantly Irish music after coming from a classical background. Andy Smythe appears at The R.M.A. Tavern in Cromwell Road, Eastbney, on Friday, where on Saturday Mary Jane will be appearing. Admission is free to both events.
