If you're a fan of quality Americana, (like The Barking Spider!) you really should try to make it to The Railway Inn, Winchester on Sunday, 27th February. The guys at this great venue are presenting Winchester's first-ever Americana festival, and the day features two of the hottest female singer-songwriters around, Laura Veirs and Gina Villalobos. Either of these syuperb artistes top the bills at major venues - yet they are sharing the bill at one of the most intimate venues in the South of England.... Laura Veirs, hails from Seattle, Washington. Her most recent album "Carbon Glacier" topped many critics' polls of 2004. Now her previous album "Orphan Mae" has just been re-released to a similar welcome, and has been voted "Album Of The Week" in this week's "Independent".. Soulful, unpretentious and clear-of-heart, Laura stands the test of time as a deeply emotionally honest artist. Gina Villalobos' new album "Rock & Roll Pony" has been hailed as "abundant with indelible hooks and sharp lyrical insight", and her single (a re-working of World Party's "Put The Message In The Box") is currently being played to death on Radio 2, for which station she is also recording a live session this week. This is a rare chance to catch this Los Angeles artist before she goes way beyond the reach of a small venue like this. Starting at 7 o' clock, the evening also features Karl Blau and Black Nielson. Tickets are £8 in advance from The Railway Inn on 01962-867795, or from Hayward Guitars in Stockbridge Road, Winchester. Further enquiries to 01962-714520
