MICHAEL PICKETT & STEVE PAYNE appear at The Bullfrog Blues Club, South Parade Pier, Southsea, tonight, Thursday 16th September. In the 70s and 80s Toronto based musician Michael Picket established himself as a musically ground-breaking, electrifying singer/songwriter/harmonica player. His 1998 CD "Blue Money" was nominated for a Juno Award and received the Jazz Report and Real Blues awards for Blues Album of the Year. Michael was also presented with the coveted Maple Blues "Blues With A Feeling" Award in recognition of his passion and commitment to the blues. The follow up album "Conversation With the Blues" earned him another JUNO nomination and won the Canadian Indie Music Award for Blues Album of the Year. This extraordinary recording is an eclectic mix of ten original compositions comprised of blues, r&b, soul, jazz, delta, and gospel. Whether putting his own spin on obscure tunes of legendary icons such as Robert Johnson, Sticks McGhee, Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt or respectfully re-interpreting the music of Tom Waits, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, or showcasing his own extraordinary eclectic material. Pickett has shared the stage with John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, John Hammond, Sunnyland Slim, James Cotton, Tom Rush and Jeff Healey, and has opened for Taj Mahal, Muddy Waters, Son Seals, and James Cotton at venues ranging from Massey Hall to New York's Village Gate. Steve Payne, who accompanies Pickett, is from Bristol, but now spends much of his time in Toronto. Payne is also an internationally acclaimed guitar player/singer/songwriter, and has been described as one of the UK's finest guitarists. His unique talents have earned him a reputation and many admirers, leading him to play with the likes of BB King, Loudon Wainwright III, Dr John, Paul Butterfield and more recently Mississippi John L Watson. He's also supported Van Morrison, Paul Brady & Dr Feelgood. Steve's ability to take a song and improvise, gives you the feeling that you've just heard something different and it is this that makes his contribution to any gig something special. As usual, tickets avaialble on the door, and doors open at 8 p.m, SEE YOU THERE!!!
