RMA Tavern: RHINO MEN tomorrow (Saturday), & ANGIE PALMER Tuesday!

The R.M.A Tavern  Cromwell Rd., Eastney :  Sat. 11th Setember - The Rhino Men
- and Tuesday 14th September - Angie Palmer:

Two very different FREE ENTRY gigs are at The R.M.A Tavern  this week.

On Saturday 11th September The Rhino Men, featuring Ian Duck on vocals,
harmonica  and lead guitar, will be serving up some top quality rock 'n blues. The
other Rhino Men are Ian McLaughlin (bass), Clive Bates  (guitar), Alan
Partridge  (drums), and Jane Mansfield on backing vocals.

Ian Duck played harmonica on Elton John's  1971 album"Tumblweed Connection"
and also played guitar on  Harry Nillson's most famous album, "Nilson
Schmilsson", which quickly reached number three in the album charts, and gold album
status.

In the late 1960s,  Ian Duck  was a founding member of Hookfoot,  along with
Dave Glover (bass), Roger Pope (drums, vocals), and Caleb Quaye (guitar,
vocals).

On Tuesday, acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist Angie Palmer drops into the
R.M.A. on her nationwide tour.

At seventeen Angie  decided to travel before taking up a place at art
college, and  ended up spending  the next seven years travelling around Europe
busking, playing bars and clubs, and small festivals.

“People often comment on the aggressiveness of my playing, but a lot of my
style came from pure economics: the better I played the better I ate. It was as
simple as that. I wanted to be as good as I could, but I had to compete with
others so I went for making my guitar sound as big as possible. I thumped and
slapped it to get some percussion so that I could grab people’s attention. If
they did that they might part with some money."

On her return to England Angie toured the blues and folk circuit, and
appeared on the acoustic stage at Glastonbury two years running.

Her songs again have strong narratives, but here they grounded in an
Americana country-blues musical setting that finds Angie drawing on her love of Bob
Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and later songwriters like Gillian Welch.

“I had been listening to Gillian Welch’s "Time (The Revelator)" a lot, the
way she brings together stories and music that seems both traditional and
revolutionary, and thinking about where my heart is really at."

Angie Palmer's third album, "Road"  is a return to her stripped down acoustic
roots with Angie working with another guitarist Mark Townson,  and Richard
Curran on violin and mandolin.

ANGIE PALMER  appears at The R.M.A Tavern in Cromwell Rd., Eastney  on
Tuesday 14th September, and  THE RHINO MEN appear on Saturday 11th
September.Admission to both gigs is FREE
