Virus warning

Hi all,

Just a quick email to advise of a virus problem.

A couple of people have told me that they have been received emails
containing a virus purporting to come from me. Someone to whom I've at one time
sent an email has had their machine taken over, and it appears my e mail
address may have been used to send on the virus.

Apparently, sometimes these virus-merchants hijack a PC's email address
book, and send messages with viral attachments from addresses that they have
harvested.

The virus then looks at the existing address book, and when it sends itself
on, it changes the 'From Address' to your address.

It's a good idea to scan your emails with up-to-date anti-virus software or
just delete suspicious emails, so the the problem won't continue to spread.

The recipient recognises the e mail, address, and then, thinking that the
email has come from someone they know, and they are more inclined to open the
attachment - thus allowing their machine to also become infected!

Just be very careful when opening attachments, even when the sender appears
to be someone you know. The usual format is a brief message - eg. 'Here's your
file'; 'Bill attached'; etc.

The attachments have various file names with a .pif suffix.Beware of minimal
message texts, and standardised Subject titles. It's best to avoid opening any
attachments with the following extensions:- .pif, .exe, .scr, .zip.

I've been advised about a whole lot of "undeliverable" e mail messages on my
incoming e mails, apparently sent to addresses they I definitely do not
recognise!

Thanks to Sam, the editor of "Folk On Tap" and also Trev Thwaites of
Apicella for alerting me - and you - of a potential problem.
