There are no less than three great FREE gigs at The R.M.A. Tavern, Cromwell Road, Eastney this week, so in reverse order.... On Saturday 25th October.......... The R.M.A. continue their run of presenting top U.S. artists on tour in the U.K. with an evening with DAMIEN JURADO From Seattle, Durado has released a bunch of singles, EPs and four albums on the famous Sub Pop label, best known for their Nirvana back catalogue. Listening to his recordings, is no wonder that Durado is one of ex Nirvana member Dave Grohl's favourite writers. Durado writes superb songs, and throughout his career, Damien Jurado has avoided categorisation by constantly heading off in new directions, styling his folky lyrical approach and straightforward guitar playing into perfect pop gems. Jurado has a priceless sense of narrative and powerful vocal delivery, with catchy-as-hell tunes with unforgettable hooks. In his songs Jurado visits abandoned whores and mermaids, boys ditching their girls, and with "Like Titanic," he weaves a modern-day love story Hollywood could never get quite right, in which two broke youngsters escape boredom by trespassing, wrecking cars, setting fires, popping pills and telling lies. Songs like "The Way You Look" and "Big Deal" will have you wanting to dance and sing along, whereas two songs from his album "I Break Chairs" - the harrowing backdrop of "Airshow Disaster" and "Lose My Head" will remind you that Damien breaks more than chairs, so watch out for your heart. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Friday 24th October.......... MAJICK KHAT (or Magick Cat or Magic Cat, depending on how they're feeling) appear with an evening of psychedelic blues. Featuring Kev Ellis (ex Dr Brown, Dr. Blue and Dr White's (oh, no sorry, I got that last one wrong wrong...) harp and blues wailing, Chris Hopgood (also with Arlen ansdd recently the Bouzouki Brothers!) on gutar, rock god Gio on bass and Dave Gladders beating his skins (!) they've promised the R.M.A.'s licensees Steve & Sally that they'll keep the volume down this time, as the last time they appeared at The R.M.A. their was a spate of nosebleeds amongst the audience. They're even threatening to do a short acoustic segment in the first set! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------- On Tuesday 21st October... ANDREW PERRY, alias The Silly Moustache, and previously of Panhandle Conspiracy and The Greenhill Boys is appearing solo this Tuesday, so look forward to a merry mix of home cooked songs, some smokey folky, some country fried, and some greasy blues. Andew says....... "The ol' Collings is back in one piece, that big ol' Stella type twelve string will be almost in tune, and there might be something bottlenecky on my new silver Tricone. I'll be doing some new (old) Hank Williams stuff as well as my repertoire of some of the most beautiful modern folk songs that I've lightly stolen from some of the best contemporary singer-songwriters in the USA today". Andrew has been working with an old fellow conspirator from Panhandle Conspiracy recently, and will join Andrew for a couple of numbers in the second half. Some of you will recall that Dave Jordan of Hot Tamales was once a member of Panhandle Conspiracy. Well, it ain't him! See you at The R.M.A.!
